BG IN LONDON PLAYERS AT THE NORDIC OPEN 2008

Friday 21st March 21.00 hours

THE CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT

The draw has also been made in The Championship flight.
There are a staggering 154 players competing in it.

The first Londoner for us to mention is Will Cockerell. We were not sure if Will was going to be playing in this event though we know he will writing reports on the event. And well worth reading they should be too. He wrote some outstanding articles at the WSOB UK Masters in November 2007 and we expect much the same standard again please from Denmark Will. He's no slouch over a backgammon board either - he's a Battersea chouette regular and this rigorous training shows in his play.

Will not only missed out on getting a bye in Round 1 but he has also been drawn against the player many think is the best in the world - Falafel Natanzon. Life is tough! However I'm sure this will at least give Will lots of material to write upon. Should he win this match Will might have to face the poker and backgammon player Gus Hansen in Round 2!

Nicky Check is a Round 1 player. Nicky, flying an English flag, has been drawn against Dan Andersen. Now that name rings a bell. We had a Dan Andersson play in Camden a couple of weeks ago - must just be a common name from that part of the world. Not to be confused with Mads Andersen either!

John Clark is the other man we are following who has also not got a bye in Round 1. John plays Johnny R. Pedersen of Denmark.

Also over there and flying a British flag is a Steve Rigby. Maybe I should be able to but I'm sorry to inform you I have no knowledge of Steve - perhaps he'll be a backgammon household name by Monday evening. Steve plays German Jan Jacobowitz in Round 2.

Mike Heard also got a bye into Round 2. It's my guess that Mike will be propping up the bar roundabout now - that's in between nipping out for a fag! Mike will play Swede Tommy Roubies in Round 2.

Peter Bennet also commences play in Round 2. He's pitted against Dane Martin Kruse Olsen. Not the fastest player in the world, but one of the most thorough, Peter is non the less used to playing on clocks as they do in this event.

And so we come to turn our attention to Murray Sharp (aka Quentin Quickcube.) He's also automatically in Round 2 and will play  Norbert Wiebusch of Germany.

And what of our great British hope of John Hurst who won the WSOB UK Masters in November 2007? Not there it seems. Nor is Julian Fetterlain. Sean Williams and Zoe Cunningham didn't make it over either.

We're also missing information on
Tariq Siddiqi, George Miltiadou, Julian Minwalla and Mick Butterfield. Maybe they are playing in The Intermediate Flight.
