A REPORT ON THE BEGINNERS FLIGHT
BY TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
SABRINA MILLING

I didn't expect much this year of the beginners division.

Last year the beginners was cancelled for the Nordic Open 2007 but a storm of protest made it turn around and I volunteered to be the tournament director for the Beginners along with a brilliant guy called Taus Boytler. With out him I would have been lost. 67 players showed up for the Beginners last year. A huge success.

This year I'm one of the staff people. I haven't been doing so much advertising for the Beginners this time now that it is official again. And at the www.nordicopen.dk site only 34 people had signed up for this division. I though to see a massive fall among the participants this time. And often a percentage of the people signed up never appears on the day.

But dear readers.......

79 people showed up this year. The record from last year was broken. Weeeehaaaa. Actually its a record of all time.

We started up around 12.30 midday "only an half hour to late" and played the last match around 10.30 late evening where we could celebrate the winner Frederik Blinkenberg. A long day for many of the players who aren't used to be playing for so many hours. And the waiting time between the matches was a killer for some of them. But I told them that they might as well get use to it. We played a tourney where all are guaranteed 6 rounds, length 5 point. So the waiting time was for the players who finished up first and had to wait for all the other players to finish up before we could start round 2.

A good day for us all, and most of the people went home after a good day in the name of backgammon.

With lots of backgammon thoughts from Sabrina at the Nordic Open in Denmark.

Note by Editor. As requested by Sabrina (who is Danish) some spelling mistakes corrected here and there but most certainly not everywhere. I wish my Danish was as good as her English is. And now I shall "show off" the extent of my knowledge of Danish - Tak Sabrina. x)
