There were 4
Qualifiers for The Scope Charity Tournament played this evening; 2
for the Masters Flight and 2 for the Championship Flight. 24
players took part, Peter Bennet (Chair of the Scope Event) was
also with us to answer any questions (and have a 2 course meal in
between doing so) which made for the best attendance at a Bg in
Fulham since June 2011.
Masters 1:
The first match of note was between Chris Bray (The Independent
Backgammon Columnist and bg book writer) and Amanda Lazard of
South Africa. The match (even though on clocks) took a long time
which is always a sign of a right good backgammon battle. Both
enjoyed their match but Chris enjoyed it a little bit more than
Amanda when the last roll was made.
Chris Jeans lost to John Broomfield. Chris re-bought into Masters
2, J.B. lost to Chris Bray in Round 1 of Masters 1.
George Miltiadou won over new to London but not new to a bg board
George Papazoglou who also re-bought into Masters 2. George M then
beat Simon Barget who also re-bought into Masters 2.
So our Masters 1 Final was between the (self confessed) underdog
George Miltiadou and Chris Bray. A good crowd watched this match
which was just won by George Miltiadou who will now play in his
first Masters Flight of the Scope Tournament for an investment of
just £25.
Championship 1:
Was all about the Beckersons. Both Alan and Monica entered and
were lucky enough to be drawn in opposite halves of the draw. They
met in the Final. There is no love lost between these long time
married couple when they meet over a bg board so both were very
much playing to win. Alan has been winning at home recently but
Monica has been winning the “important” matches as was the case
here.
Championship 2:
Both Peter Hartley and Thomas Otto had lost in Championship 1 and
both re-bought in Champs 2. They met in the Final. Both were
tired, some mis-plays were made and settled amicably but at DMP
Thomas got his checkers off before Peter did.
Masters 2:
Jon Barnes had qualified last year via a Bg in Fulham qualifier
but it was not to be this time. The Final was between George
Papazoglou and Chris Jeans with the win going to Chris Jeans.
There will be another evening of qualifiers in Fulham on Mon 13th
February that I’m sure Chris Bray, Jon Barnes, Simon Barget, Tariq
Siddiqi, J.B, Tony Steward, Alan Beckerson, Gary Brooker, Graham
Read, David Garofalo and others will attend. How else could you
invest £15 or £25 for the chance of winning a Geoffrey Parker
board valued at over £1000 and well as having a lovely Sunday out
in one of the best Clubs in London?
See you in Fulham on Mon 13th February or just book direct for the
Scope event via
