And so came the
big new day in South West London. How'd it go? What's the venue
like? Is it easy to get to? Where there many players there? Will
there be more? Oh, and who won this evening?
I'd not hammed it up before the event; we had told the Pub to expect
about 20 players, wrote a fairly simple webpage for it and sent
out 2 emails (announcement and reminder) about it to
the mailing list. All sorted, all ready, we sat back and were
interested to see what would happen.
The event was billed as mostly a Swiss Tournament evening. We ran
4 of them for 32 players - a
new record and included 12 new members. Due to demand we also ran
a Camden Auction for an 8 player Knockout followed by 4
Mini-Jackpots.
The Players loved the venue; it's spacious in the back room, a few
matches were played in the front of the pub and available tables
was never an issue - we could easily have had over 70 players. Having
the tournament charts projected onto the big screen also proved
popular. The staff were very good, the beers and wines were well
received and the food was good enough though they had run out of
mash so were serving bangers and chips.
One or two players had a little trouble finding the venue but no
more than that - just remember it's on the corner of Fulham and
Munster Roads. Parking was easy - poodle around in the gentile
residential streets off Munster Road.
All of which means that yes, there will be more events here - the
2nd Monday of every month for the remainder of 2010. We'll keep the
evening as mostly a Swiss Tournament evening but will run a Camden
Auction prompt at 7.00pm for those that wish Knockout backgammon.
Oh, and who won? James Grenier took Jackpot 1, Martin Hemming, Liz
Giannopoulos, James Fenton and Graham Read won the Mini-Jackpots,
Neil Robins, George Miltiadou and Nick Boles won the £10 Swisses
but, for me, the star of the evening was Roya Ireland who, having
attended about 4 Bg in London evenings and, apparently having
never yet won a single match, turned it all around this evening
and won the £5 Swiss. Bravo.
