3rd November 2009

36 Entries, 5 Tournaments, 32 Players, £1000 Prize Fund,
Edward Leighton wins Jackpot.

Not a huge turnout of players this month but there's been quite a few backgammon events of late and the rain was lashing down during the day so, if I were a player, I would have been tempted to retreat home to the fireside. But 32 players is enough to make an evening of it for those there.

8 players in Tournament 1 at £100 a piece, 8 x £10 Swiss players and another 8 x £5 in Swiss 2 followed by a further 8 in a £10 Jackpot. We had them all playing by 7.20pm.

I would never describe Edward Leighton as a slow player but at 7.23pm when he came to the T.D. desk to report his first win even I was staggered. His match couldn't have taken much more than 13 minutes - that's got to be a record Edward!  After a wait Edward beat Nicky Check then Raj Jansari to claim victory in Tournament 1. Bravo Edward.

I do not like to cause alarm but there is cause for alarm to players so I shall do so. Annette Sutherland came along to her 3rd Bg in Camden and has to date only lost 1 in 9 matches, has won a Jackpot and, this evening, won a Swiss. Her next performance will be at Bg Live in London on 13 14 15 November and I fully expect her to walk away with trophies and medals.

Quiet and unassuming Ray M gathered 3 wins in Swiss 2, Monica held the flame for the Beckersons by winning the Mini-Jackpot and Fintan O'Boyle left a happy man after winning Tournament 2 having been refused a split.

Summary:

The music was too loud and inappropriate for the playing of a mind sport. I'll be having a word with the management.
