7th October 2008

56 Entries, 9 Tournaments, 44 Players, £1578 Prize Fund,
Michael Michael wins Jackpot.

A £130 8 player entry, a £25 8 player entry, 3 £10 8 player entries, 1 1/2 Swiss Tournaments, 4 £1 4 player entries and a Doubles matches were the bill of fare on this evening. With 44 players in the house it was a good backgammon buzz.

Of note was the performance of Hayley Richardson (nee Bennet but not related to any other backgammoning Bennets / Bennetts.) We've not seen Hayley for about 3 years when we ran Tric Trac Tourno evenings at Ryan's Bar in Stoke Newington. But here she was set for a comeback following a workshop session set for between 6.0 and 7.0pm. However she got caught in traffic and didn't arrive until just before 7.00pm. Could she remember how to play? I slotted Hayley into a Swiss Tournament to ensure her 3 matches. Match 1 she won 5-0. Match 2 she did the same. Before match 3 I told her that her entry fee was now guaranteed to come back to her because she has won at least 2 of 3 and that id she won number 3 she'd win £50. "No pressure then?" she asked so I replied that the real pressure was on the big boys in Tournament 1 who were playing for a lot more than she was. A little while later she came back sporting a huge smile - not quite another 5-niler but she'd won her first event. Bravo.

Tournament 1 took a long while to play due to long backgames being part of a well watched semi-final and as such had to have a shortened final to a 3 pointer. In the final Michael Michael won over Mourad.

Summary:

A good evening of backgammon with a good variety of backgammon played including some casual games and a Doubles match as well.

The next big Bg in London event will be at a new venue -
The Auberge Bar and Restaurant at London Bridge on Sunday 19th October.
It ticks boxes galore - players were not overly enchanted with the St John's Wood venue
and this is our response. It's a 2 minute walk from London Bridge Station, we have the entire lower restaurant and bar to ourselves and entry fees and commissions are the same as in Camden. We expect upwards of 60 payers and we'll be bringing along our 32 Hector-Saxe boards. Missing it will be a crime.

Other than that we're now running casual and workshop evenings in Islington every Monday and will be back in Camden on Tuesday 4th November a few days before the annual Backgammon Live in London.
