Have you ever
thought about playing in a backgammon tournament but never quite
plucked up the courage to do so? It’s really not that frightening
and you may well be pleasantly surprised at how well you do.
If you’re not quite ready to enter the fray then read about it
first! Every year Mike Main runs a superb three-day event – Live
in London. Following last year’s tournament Sean Williams, with
the help of many others, put together an excellent book covering
all aspects of the weekend, including match analyses, anecdotes
and many colour photos. It can be purchased from
www.lulu.com (key ‘Backgammon
Live in London’ into the search field). A budget paperback version
is also available.
For those wanting to venture into live play for the first time
have a look at

In this week’s position white had to run off his anchor after
rolling 63. Would you redouble? Over the board black, seeing a
veritable plethora of shots, promptly redoubled but he was
premature.
Any return hit by white is likely to be fatal for black because of
white’s strong home board, and that forty pip difference in the
race is very significant. If white re-anchors after the blot on
black’s 10-pt is hit he will retain good winning chances for a
long time.
Unless you think your opponent will pass (and I know some who
would) you should hang on to the cube as black in this position.
One final question for you to consider over your breakfast muesli
– after double/take how should black play 66?
