Norwood’s Backgammon Series 3, which culminated in the Grand Final
at luxurious restaurant Sketch in Central London on Monday 26
January, raised a total over £50,000 for the charity.
Following almost a year of intense competition spread across four
qualifying rounds, which began in May last year, the final on the
evening itself raised over £10,000 for Norwood, the UK's leading
charity supporting children, families and adults, coping with
learning disabilities and social disadvantage, in the Jewish
community and beyond.
The event, which was generously sponsored by The Pears Foundation,
was won by Lawrence Powell, who beat Mike Main in the final to
claim the first prize of £1,500. Tom Duggan finished in third
place, while the consolation tournament was won by Jeremy Bagai.
In between rounds, an auction was held for a Geoffrey Parker ‘Off
The Bench’ backgammon board, which was purchased by David Gaventa.
Mark Pollack, Chair of Norwood’s Backgammon Committee, said, “This
year’s tournament has not only raised substantial funds for
Norwood, but it has also attracted a high standard of play. It has
been a really enjoyable social event, and I would like to thank
our sponsors and the numerous players who participated in all of
the tournaments throughout the year. The money raised from these
tournaments will go towards providing vital services to enable
children and families with learning disabilities and social
disadvantage in the Community to reach their full potential in
life.”
Norwood’s Backgammon Series 3 has established itself as one of the
leading tournaments on the backgammon circuit.
