WINNER OF THE QUALIFIERS FOR MONTE CARLO WORLD BACKGAMMON CHAMPIONSHIP

WHO IS PRUSOMS16?

Mr Julian Wilson
of London, England

Julian Wilson and daughter Brooke

In the late 80s Julian Wilson ran Victor Lownes Backgammon Mondays at the Stocks Club Kings Road, Chelsea. In the late 80s early 90s he conceived, ran and raised £30,000 added sponsorship for what was called the European Championships (with the most added prize money on the Backgammon circuit at the time). The finals were held each year in Deauville France at the Hotel Normandy which was attended by some giants of the game including: Robertie, Magriel, Marmorstein, Svobodny (4 ex world champions).

Julian also co-conceived, played in and provided the live commentary for the first $1m tournament in Bahamas alongside Bill Robertie and Kent Goulding. Here Julian arguably had his best ever tournament result beating Peter Jes Thomson in the opening round and getting to the last 8 of the Consolation knocking out Paul Magriel amongst others.

More recently other things have occupied Julian but he has maintained a strong interest in backgammon not least of which has been his membership of the Cancer-Backup / MacMillan Backgammon Tournament Committee that raises something like £30,000 per annum for charity. It was through this that Julian learnt of Backgammon in London and he has since become a great supporter of what we do.

This will not be the first time that Julian Wilson has played in The Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championships - to him places such as The Fairmont Hotel are a natural environment. He has never had any major tournament victory to speak of though his time for one is now due. We expect and hope that Julian will do well.
