Dear Backgammon in London Player,
I am writing to personally invite you to the London Open 2012
which will take place on 18th, 19th and 20th May 2012 at Brown’s
Courtrooms in Covent Garden in the heart of central London.
The London Open 2012 will be the largest completely open
tournament in the world. We are expecting 128 players.
£0 Registration £0 Entry
The London Open will be unique amongst backgammon tournaments.
Registration and entry are completely free. We are hoping that, by
making the tournament free to play in, we will attract more
players.
There will, of course, be optional pools for those who wish to
play for money. These pools will be 100% return.
In addition there will be a £250 first prize to play for as well
as the coveted London Open trophy.
The tournament is being filmed and will be shown in a series of 15
minute shows on Sky TV. By entering you consent for your image to
be used in the broadcasts.
Format
The Backgammon London Open 2012 will be a 128 player
single-elimination knock-out tournament. Clocks will be optional.
The Tournament Director, Michael Main, will mandate the use of
clocks where a match is holding up the tournament. Matches will be
to 5 points in the first 6 rounds. The Final will be to 7 points.
There will be a series of on-going side events throughout the
weekend for players who are knocked out of the main tournament.
Many of these (including the London Jackpot and the London Cup)
will offer longer length matches.
The British Backgammon Awards
The London Open will host the inaugural British Backgammon Awards.
The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of Saturday
19th May and will recognise the outstanding players and
contributors to this great game over the past 12 months.
The awards ceremony will be accompanied by a sumptuous
three-course Gala Dinner. The three-course Gala Dinner costs £35.
An Awards Nomination Form is attached to this email.
How Do I Enter?
Player numbers will be strictly limited to 128 players. Given the
interest that we have had so far and the £0 entry and £0
registration we expect to be quickly oversubscribed. Players
attending the Gala Dinner will be given precedence over those not
attending the dinner*. To reserve your place please fill in the
Entry Form below and return it to 10 Tavistock Place, London,
WC1H9RD, by hand to Sean Williams, Zoe Cunningham or Michael Main
or by email to
stw672@googlemail.com
* You are therefore only guaranteed a place if you are one of the
first 128 people to sign up for the Gala Dinner.
The Professionals’ Tournament
In addition to the London Open there will also be a Professionals’
Tournament running on the 19th and 20th May. Players must play in
the London Open if they want to play in the Professionals’
Tournament.
The Professionals' Tournament will host a maximum of 64 players
with first-round rebuys permitted.
There will be £0 Registration Fee and a £250 Entry Fee that will
be 100% returned in prize monies.
Matches will be played on clocks to 11 points with a 13-point
final.
I look forward to seeing you at the London Open 2012. If you have
any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me on
07806 420691 or at stw672@googlemail.com.
Yours sincerely,
Sean Williams
