German Uli Koch was crowned the
first ever CasinoRip.com London Open Backgammon Champion last
Sunday (31st May), beating Julian Fetterlein in a tense final.
Professional player Koch is one of the most respected and
successful players in the world and has won many tournaments since
he first started playing backgammon in the 1970’s. He battled
through several rounds to eventually meet Fetterlein, another well
known name on the circuit who has previously tasted success.
The event was an unprecedented success and attracted a high
quality of competitors, with players from as far afield as Japan,
Romania and the United States competing in the 56-strong
Championship flight. A further 30 players participated in the
intermediate and casual competitions and the total prize fund
exceeded £12,000. The tournament was played out in the glorious
London sunshine overlooking the Thames and some of the city’s most
famous landmarks.
Mike Main, Director of Backgammon in London, the organisers of the
event said, “The quality of play and a gorgeous setting made it
a truly fantastic weekend and produced one of the most exciting
events I can remember. Congratulations must go to both our
finalists and a big thank you to all the competitors and our
sponsors CasinoRip.com for helping to make it such a successful
tournament.”
